Making your own nappies can be a whole lot of fun, not to mention the savings. No matter your level of sewing skill, there is a DIY nappy project you can try. Some are even no-sew and you only need a pair of scissors.

How Much Fabric Do I Need To Make…

This is one of our most frequently asked questions. So we have put together a guide. Please be aware that the below are estimates and can be dependent on how you cut, your pattern used, and some variables in fabric shrink rates. Always pre-wash your fabric in warm water before cutting. Click here to learn more about how to correctly cut your fabric and get the most use out of it. Scroll down to the bottom of this post for a summary of costs per project.

These are some of the products our customers frequently make:

  • Waterproof nappy covers

Fabrics used/recommended: PUL, Waterproof Soft Shell, Easy-stitch PUL

This is dependent on the pattern you are using, but most one-size-fits-most nappy patterns fall in the size category where you should be able to get 6 pieces out of 1 meter of fabric. This can be optimized using dovetailing when placing your pattern pieces on fabric.

  • 70cm x 70cm nappy flats (One-size-fits-all)

Fabrics used/recommended: Hemp Jersey, Brushed Cotton Fleece, Bamboo Terry

While you can get 2 flats out of 1 meter of fabric, you can optimise the number of nappies you can get from your fabric by buying longer pieces of continuous meters. We have found the most economical quantity to be 4 continuous meters. Out of 4 continuous meters you should be able to fit 10 flats. When using Brushed Cotton Fleece, you will have left over fabric along the sides which you can use to make extra inserts or boosters.

  • 50cm x 50cm nappy flats (Newborn)

Fabrics used/recommended: Hemp Jersey, Brushed Cotton Fleece, Bamboo Terry

The most economical way of cutting newborn flats is to buy a 4 meter continuous piece of fabric.

  • 4 continuous meters of Brushed Cotton Fleece = 21 newborn flats + leftover fabric along the side to make inserts/boosters
  • 4 continuous meters of Bamboo Terry = 21 newborn flats
  • 4 continuous meters of Hemp Jersey = 14 newborn flats + leftover fabric along the side to make inserts/boosters.
  • Standard nappy inserts

Fabrics used/recommended: Hemp Fleece, Brushed Cotton Fleece, Bamboo Terry

Most nappy inserts are approximately 12cm x 33cm in size (this can vary depending on brand). We are using this sizing as a marker. The most economical quantity to purchase would be 3 continuous meters of fabric, that way there will be minimal wastage. Using only 1 meter will result in a lot of wastage.

  • Brushed Cotton Fleece (We recommend using 4 layers per insert), you should fit around 30 4-layer inserts.
  • Hemp Fleece (We recommend using 3 layers per insert), you should fit around 29 3-layer inserts.
  • Bamboo Terry (We recommend using 3 layers per insert), you should fit around 34 3-layer inserts.

Stay-Dry nappy liners

Fabrics used/recommended: Suedecloth, Microfleece

Most liners are approximately 13cm x 33cm, but you can cut them according to your personal preference. As the fabrics used for stay-dry liners have minimal to no shrinkage, we can calculate it on 1m pieces. 1m of both recommended fabrics should give you 33 liners. You do not need to sew the edges as they do not fray, so this is a great no-sew starter project that will save you a lot of money!
