Suggested fabrics:

Topper fabric: This is the top fabric that goes against your skin. It can be made of a natural fabric if you are sensitive, or a polyester-based stay dry fabric. Suggestions from the Mini Matters store;

• Birdseye moisture wicking jersey (stay-dry)
• Printed brushed DTY fabric (stay-dry)
• Organic bamboo & cotton velour (natural, soft & luxurious)
• Cotton french terry (100% natural)
• Any of our other cotton/bamboo fleeces

Backer Fabric: This is the fabric at the bottom of your pad that goes against the underwear. It should be waterproof or water resistant as it’s job is to prevent leaking. Suggestions from the Mini Matters store:

• Any of the PUL waterproof fabrics – they are pliable with a non-plastic feel, non-noisy, and approved for safe use in personal care products. 3-ply= easier sewing, fully waterproof. 2-ply= slightly thinner, fully waterproof.
• Waterproof softshell fleece (please note that most softshell fleeces in regular fabric stores are NOT waterproof). This is a highly recommended fabric for sewing pads, the one side is fleecy (use this side on the outside). It grips the underwear nicely and prevents the pad from slipping around.

Soaker Fabric: This is the fabric that gets layered and makes up the core (the absorbent) part of the pad. You will need to use several layers depending on the absorbency level needed and the thickness of the fabric. Usually around 2-4 layers. Avoid making it overly thick as the pad will not wash and dry properly. Suggestions from the Mini Matters store:

• Any of our cotton/bamboo/hemp fleeces or french terry. Check the fabric GSM (the weight per square meter). The higher the GSM, the more absorbent it is. Always pre-wash these fabrics to pre-shrink before cutting.
